Make Your Money and Move On

Copyright law has been a source of much contention on the internet. While trying to protect their intellectual property, the entertainment industry has alienated customers by making it more difficult to access and share content. Some say that the solution is to end the practice of copyrighting. But that is ridiculous. How would anybody be able to make money without copyright? The best solution is to shorten the length of copyright down to no more than 20 years. That is more than enough time for the original creator to reap the rewards of their creation without further hindering the "progress of science and useful arts."

  1. Copyright was created in a time when artists were scarce. Today, that is not the case. While having a 20 year copyright would be worlds ahead and better than what we have now, it is possible to have a system without copyright and still have the artists paid their dues. I think it would be really difficult to do correctly, but I believe it is possible.

  2. Even in the case where the copyright lasted for the artist's lifetime, it wasn't all that bad. Where the major issue is is where those copyrights get transferred to a company, which doesn't die, and then can continue to be bought and sold between companies. For instance, I really enjoy a lot of the stuff that Disney does, but the fact that there is still a copyright on Mickey Mouse, who was created back in 1928, is ridiculous.
